User Participation & Mashups : an innovation catalyst in the Web 2.0 Era

10h45 - 11h30

by Fayçal BOUJEMAA, Head of "SaaS & Service Composition" Program -
Orange Labs – Issy-les-Moulineaux, France.

The web 2.0 has emerged after the "dot-com bubble crash". This second generation of the Internet is a more mature, distinctive medium characterized by user participation, openness, and network effects. Regardless of their skills and expertise, users are given the opportunity to share, to enrich their respective/ mutual contributions, they become prosumers . The power of the crowd and of the ecosystems is acting more than ever before. This social behavior is becoming one of the major factors of innovation & value creation in the web 2.0 Era. These value creation and innovation come from mashups that are the combination/ orchestration/ aggregation by one player of basic building blocks (produced by other players) in order to create a new /composite block that is innovative, valuable and customized. This crowd-driven and mashup-based innovation process is already in action with a huge impact on the existing landscapes:
  1. in the knowledge domain through the user-generated knowledge with the emblematic Wikipedia and its impacts on the existing encyclopedia (e.g. Encarta discontinued...)
  2. in the content domain through the user-generated content with YouTube or DailyMotion and their impacts on the traditional content-delivery channels audience (TV/Cable channels)
  3. in the (software) services domain through the user-generated services & applications with Apple, Salesforce.com, Google and few others as visible symbols. This is deeply impacting the software world and related industries.
For sure the cloud computing, the SaaS  and the Internet of Services trends will boost the user-generated services & applications. But, in order to let a larger amount of people and operators attend the game many other challenges are still to be addressed (to enumerate a few):
  • user-friendly / zero programming service mashup tools
  • easy to use, yet expressive languages for service orchestration (e.g.; Orc language)
  • semantically-aided service orchestration
  • service modelers gathering functional & SLA composition
  • service searching & discovery
  • holistic event-driven Service-Oriented Architecture
  • composite services life-cycle management
  • flexible service catalogue & revenue sharing (Business Support System aspects)
  • intellectual property management in composite services environment
  • open standards
  • ...
As an operator / mediator, Orange is contributing to the emergence of this new era by:
  1. publishing / opening its common telco services APIs - cf. Orange Partner web site,
  2. launching (two years ago) the Open Mahups Studio open source initiative - cf. web site,
  3. planning a cloud computing/XaaS business initiative - cf. recent Cloud computing by Orange press release.
Orange is also asking the academic communities help and support in order to address the above challenges and initiatives.
